Distant voices...

A Grassroots Comics workshop was organized by the members of New Ways group in association with Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, Guwahati. The trainers were Minakshi Gogoi, Sushmita Lahkar and Usha Dewani.

35 inmates of State home for Women participated in the workshop including 1 volunteer from Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti. The participants were minor girls, who are homeless, trauma struck or rescued victims of social vices like trafficking, prostitution, child labour etc.

The objective of the workshop was to help the participants express their suppressed feelings through the medium of comics. Majority of the participants could not read or write and the workshop was meant to bring a breakthrough in their usual way of communicating their concerns.

  1. Hei freinds, very nicely done, sincerely executed effort. Hope that all of you get the ample spirited motivation to continue.....
Sometimes, we may feel that it is meaningless, but actually meaning lies behind those who done it meaningfully, purposefully and hopefully, that one day will come when our dreamy roses will bloom amid the storm...

    Thanking All U

    Dear New Ways Activists,

It was heartwarming to read about your workshop. I tried to access the full report document, but it was not available behind the link. It would have been interesting to know how many comics you were able to finish during the workshop and how many days you were running it. If you could upload one or two of the stories from the workshop, that would be great!

Many thanks for taking the grassroots comics method further, all the best,
